Fortunately, impacted customers don\u2019t have to take any action on their end and they will be automatically notified and receive checks from the company by mail<\/p>\n<p>In a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ag.ny.gov\/press-release\/2022\/attorney-general-james-secures-141-million-millions-americans-deceived-turbotax\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ag.ny.gov\/press-release\/2022\/attorney-general-james-secures-141-million-millions-americans-deceived-turbotax\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>, Attorney General James provided further insight on the matter and explained how the agreement will put companies on notice regarding deceptive marketing, saying:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIntuit cheated millions of low-income Americans out of free tax filing services they were entitled to. For years, Intuit misled the most vulnerable among us to make a profit. Today, every state in the nation is holding Intuit accountable for scamming millions of taxpayers, and we\u2019re putting millions of dollars back into the pockets of impacted Americans. This agreement should serve as a reminder to companies large and small that engaging in these deceptive marketing ploys is illegal. New Yorkers can count on my office to protect their wallets from white-collar scammers.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"deceptive-marketing\">Deceptive marketing<\/h2>\n<p>According to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/5\/4\/23057463\/intuit-141-million-agreement-new-york-attorney-general-turbotax-free\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/5\/4\/23057463\/intuit-141-million-agreement-new-york-attorney-general-turbotax-free\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Verge<\/em><\/a>, there are actually two versions of Intuit\u2019s TurboTax software with the word \u201cfree\u201d in their name: TurboTax Free Edition and TurboTax Free File.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that the company marketed the Free Edition of its tax software as being completely free, close to 4.4m taxpayers actually ended up owing the company money after using it.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of TurboTax Free Edition, these taxpayers should have actually been using TurboTax Free File which up until recently, was part of the IRS\u2019 Free File program that saw the US government work together with tax preparation companies to provide US citizens with a free way to file their taxes.
