{"id":75110,"date":"2023-07-22T04:33:48","date_gmt":"2023-07-22T03:33:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smartmileco.com\/google-says-an-apple-employee-found-a-serious-chrome-zero-day-but-did-not-report-it\/"},"modified":"2023-07-22T04:33:48","modified_gmt":"2023-07-22T03:33:48","slug":"google-says-an-apple-employee-found-a-serious-chrome-zero-day-but-did-not-report-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/smartmileco.com\/google-says-an-apple-employee-found-a-serious-chrome-zero-day-but-did-not-report-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Google says an Apple employee found a serious Chrome zero-day, but did not report it","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/fvbStTQCssiBEA9kzAtLL3.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>An Apple employee knew about a bug in the Chrome <u>browser<\/u> but did not report it to Google\u2019s developers, reports have claimed.<\/p>\n<p>A <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bugs.chromium.org\/p\/chromium\/issues\/detail?id=1427865#c49\" data-url=\"https:\/\/bugs.chromium.org\/p\/chromium\/issues\/detail?id=1427865#c49\" rel=\"noopener\">comment<\/a> on the Chromium bug report site instead credits another individual for notifying Google, noting, \u201cThis issue was reported by sisu from CTF team HXP and discovered by a member of Apple Security Engineering and Architecture (SEAR) during HXP CTF 2022, which will be acknowledged in the security fix notes for the appropriate Stable channel release at the time they are updated.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p>At the time, the bug was a zero-day, however a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/07\/20\/google-says-apple-employee-found-a-zero-day-but-did-not-report-it\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/07\/20\/google-says-apple-employee-found-a-zero-day-but-did-not-report-it\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><u><em>TechCrunch<\/em><\/u><\/a> report says that Google\u2019s $10,000 bug bounty was awarded to the individual who reported the bug, not the Apple employee who discovered the bug.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"chrome-bug-left-unreported-by-apple-employee-3\">Chrome bug left unreported by Apple employee<\/h2>\n<p>Usually, tech companies work together to notify each other of bugs in the interest of cybersecurity, despite going head-to-head in other aspects of business.<\/p>\n<p>Gallileo, an individual claiming to be the Apple employee in question on a Discord channel viewed by <em>TechCrunch<\/em>, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was reported on June 5th, through my company. Yes it was late, there are multiple reasons for that. I first had to find the person responsible, the report had to be signed off by people and then the person responsible was [out of office]. It\u2019s commendable that chrome decided to fix it asap, but I think there wasn\u2019t any real urgency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the flip side, the individual responsible for breaking the news to Chromium developers said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTBH, I have not looked into the issue since I did not discover the bug. However, I'm not 100% sure it was reported to the chromium team, so I wanted to be safe\u2026 This report is to ensure it gets handled in case team COPY has not yet reported it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>TechRadar Pro<\/em> asked both companies &#8211; Google and Apple &#8211; for more information about the miscommunication.
