LG Reveals Its First Gaming Laptop

We're used to LG impressing us with it's large, yet lightweight Gram laptops, but now the company is trying to spark a similar reaction by launching a 17.3-inch gaming laptop.

LG is using the premium UltraGear brand for its first ever gaming laptop, called the 17G90Q. On paper, it boasts some impressive specs by combining an Intel 11th-Gen Tiger Lake-H Core processor and a Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Max-Q Graphics GPU. Add to that dual-channel 16 or 32GB of DDR4 RAM, dual M.2 SSD slots holding up to 1TB of storage (each, we have to assume), and you've certainly got the makings of a high-performance portable machine. The finishing touch is a 17.3-inch 1080p IPS display with a 300Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time.

Building on its experience designing the Gram laptops, LG has managed to include a 93Wh battery while keeping the laptop thickness at 21.4mm (0.84-inches) and weight at 2.7kg (5.82lbs). The case is aluminum, the keyboard includes per-key RGB backlighting, and 3D audio is provided via a two-way speaker system (2W x four speakers) with DTS:X Ultra. A wide array of ports are available, including a USB 4 Gen 3×2 Type C (with Thunderbolt 4), a USB 3.2 Gen 2×1 Type C, two USB 3.2 Gen 2×1, HDMI, RJ45, DC-In, headphone jack, and microSD/UFS. Wi-Fi 6E wireless is provided by Intel Killer Wireless.

Squeezing a high performance processor and GPU into a thin case is certainly going to produce a lot of heat under load. LG aims to keep that under control without creating too much noise by using a cooling system with vapor chamber (you may remember LG also used a vapor chamber to cool its first 5G phone). You can keep tracks of temperatures, frequencies, and overall performance using the included LG UltraGear Studio software. Hardware security comes in the form of a fingerprint reader on the power button.

If this sounds like your perfect gaming laptop, LG is expected to make it available at some point early next year in both the US and South Korea. Pricing hasn't been revealed, but with CES 2022 kicking off on Jan. 4, expect this laptop to be on display along with details of how much it will cost. A realistic battery life estimate would also be appreciated.
