Reddit blackout: why your favorite subreddits are down and what happens next

Update (Thursday, June 15): we've updated this article with the latest news on the Reddit blackout, including a leaked memo from Reddit's CEO that could prolong the blackout.

The Reddit blackout is showing no sign of fizzling out, even though we're now well past its scheduled 48-hour window. The protests started as a pushback against new developer charges that have effectively killed many popular third-party Reddit apps – and at the time of writing, over 5,000 subreddits are still dark (according to the Reddit blackout tracker).
